Let’s go out and communicate our faith while inviting people to our weekly connect group! I am afraid sometimes that independent Baptist churches have tried to become far too politically correct in our language. Statements such as the statement above scare me in our local churches. I expect such talk from protestant groups who conform themselves in order to appeal to a politically correct world. I expect such language to be used in secular Christian movies such as “Courageous” or “Flywheel”. I expect people like Joel Olsteen and Rick Warren to talk like that. I do not expect to find such watered-down, politically correct language in our independent fundamental Baptist churches. When you change the descriptive language you change the attitude of the people toward the action you are trying to represent.
For instance, since when did it become necessary to change SOUL WINNING to COMMUNICATING OUR FAITH? The term “communicating our faith” does not complete the action. When I go out soul winning I do not simply attempt to “communicate my faith” but rather I attempt to WIN SOULS TO JESUS! THUS I CALL IT SOUL WINNING! This term completes the action of what I am trying to accomplish. Evidence of this is found in the mouths of the same people who would make such a change. They follow up by asking questions like, “How do you know they really meant it when they prayed and trusted Christ with you?” or “Can the amount of production (souls won) really be a measure stick for how well you bear fruit?” They also make statements like, “The amount of relationships you are cultivating with the lost may indicate how well you are doing in witnessing.” Questions and statements like these have a negative impact on the work of God. Production will become less in less in such an environment until it is absolutely extinct.
Why have we done away with Sunday School and formed connect groups? Why have we taken out Wednesday Night Bible study and in turn started Wednesday Night split session cell groups? We have started having family movie night on Sunday Night, and no invitation on Sunday Morning. We lower our dress standards and heighten our community awareness projects. We then wonder why our young people are falling away. Could it possibly be because they never get a good dose of the preaching of God’s Word? Could it be because they never have a chance to hit an old fashioned altar? Could it be that God’s Word is discussed rather than taught in these so-called connect groups? When you mess with the terminology, you change the attitude. When you change the attitude, you change the atmosphere. When you change the atmosphere, it becomes easy change the purpose. I’m afraid so many of our good churches are setting aside their soul winning, bus ministry, vision, and zeal to embrace this new terminology and ideology. It is costing us our children. It is costing us our nation. It is costing souls their eternity!
