Salvation by Grace through Faith is the simplest form of the Gospel we could possibly give, yet it covers every truth clothed in simplicity. Salvation (Romans 6:23)- we must be saved from hell (death & eternal separation from God) by grace (Ephesians 2:8&9) - favor which we do not deserve, through faith (Romans 10:9&10) - believing in salvation from hell by the favor of God through Christ's death on the Cross. This doctrine is the basis of all beliefs we hold to be true from the Word of God. It is the foundation upon which all other doctrines are built upon, for without Salvation, we have no Saviour, without a Saviour we have no Spirit, and without a Spirit we have no understanding of God's Word or ability to live it!
We as an English speaking people have the awesome and wonderful privilege to Hold, Cherish, Read, and study the very Words of God in our English Language. I would like you to follow with me for a moment as I use one of our greatest yet forgotten tools, The Dictionary, More Specifically the Webster’s 1828 Dictionary, as I Define a few words and correlate them to our stand on the Scriptures concerning the matter of “Salvation by Grace through Faith”.
Webster’s dictionary defines Salvation as "Liberation from the Bondage and Results of Sin" and "Preservation from destruction or calamity". We are sinful creatures with sinful flesh, it is a problem born in us, brought through the bloodline according to Romans 5:12. The scriptures tell us that our hearts are deceitfully wicked in Jeremiah 17:9 and in Ecclesiastes 7:20, Romans 3:10 & 3:23 we see that there is no man righteous in the eyes of our Almighty and Holy God! In Isaiah 64:6 we see that our most righteous actions are still filthy rags before God. In Proverbs 14:12 we see that man's ways lead to death, and in Romans 6:23 that death is what we have earned for our sin problem. Death in its simplest form is separation. Death separates us from our loved ones and in this particular case separates us eternally from God. We are most surely in need of "Liberation from the bondage and results of sin". The second definition given by Webster is also appropriate as “Preservation” gives us the security of knowing that it is a lasting liberation. It is a promise of God, It is a Gift of God, and God cannot lie! Our Salvation, when we obtain it, is secured in heaven forever and sealed, our names written in the Lamb’s Book of Life never to be erased. If an individual is told by a Doctor that they possess a disease in their body that will most definitely take their life, the first thought and response is “what can I do to stay alive”. In like manner, we possess a disease in our body and blood, called sin. It will cause death, separation from God for eternity. Because of this, we must turn to the scriptures to find that the only way to live eternally is Salvation by Grace through Faith.
Webster’s dictionary defines the word grace as "Divine unmerited favor toward man". In many respects, Grace is the most important aspect of the doctrine we are discussing. It acknowledges that there is nothing in us that could bring about our own salvation. Grace is extended even though we do not deserve it! There is nothing one can do to get Grace, it is freely bestowed without regard, never earned. Someone once defined Grace in an Acronym; Gods Riches At Christ's Expense. How amazing that the riches of God, to dwell in Heaven, and enjoy the place and peace of God are bestowed on us at the expense of God's own Son who freely gave his life and blood on the cross of Calvary! I must interject here that the Expense of Christ; His life and Blood, was the only capable and acceptable act of Grace capable of saving our souls. This truth is best represented through Ephesians 2:8-9, wherein we learn that nothing we do can to save ourselves! It is only because of the gift of God!
Finally, Webster's dictionary defines the word “faith” as “Inward acceptance of a personality as real and trustworthy, an idea as true and obligatory, or of a thing as beneficial”. Also, Webster defines “faith” as “belief in the truthfulness and authority of the Scriptural narrative and teachings”. What amazing understanding that Webster had of scripture! Romans 10:9-10 teaches this very truth, that we must believe these things in our heart! With our hearts, inwardly we are to accept Christ as real and trustworthy to save us and that salvation is beneficial to us. With our hearts, we are to believe what we find in the pages of scripture concerning salvation, grace, and so much more! In Matthew 15:18 and Luke 6:45 we are taught that what is in our heart exits via our mouth. Romans 10:10 teaches us that the heart is to believe, but the mouth is to confess. There is much to be found in the book of Hebrews regarding the subject of “Faith” also. Without faith it is impossible to please God, for the first step of faith is salvation, thus enters the Spirit with which are to be filled, who points and directs us towards God in all things. The writer of Hebrews gives a definition of Faith found in Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen”. What we hope for is the blessed return of our Saviour Jesus Christ to call up with him to Glory those who have been saved by His grace. Faith provides substance to this hope. Our Faith is evidence not only to ourselves but to others also of the things which they cannot see.
In conclusion, I would like to simply paraphrase Mr. Webster. Someone may ask you, “What is Salvation by Grace through Faith?” “I Just cannot understand it!” The answer should be; Liberation from the bondage and effects of sin by divine unmerited favor through an acceptance of Christ as real and trustworthy to save me and a belief in the truthfulness and authority of Scripture and its teachings! Salvation by Grace through Faith is to be kept from going to hell to pay for our sins, only by the gift of God that we believed in and accepted! There ought to be no other doctrine or belief that a Man of God believes and knows more than this! It is the basis of everything we are, and it is the reason for which we are to preach the word! It is part of the Will of God for every person on the face of the Earth. “God is not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” Believe It, Live It, Preach It, Stand on It, and Share it wherever you may go!
“Give me 100 preachers who fear nothing but sin and desire nothing but God; such alone will shake the gates of hell.” -John Wesley
